School holiday fun at home

Entertain the kids with fun veg & fruit themed activities.

School holidays and weekends are being spent a little differently this winter so we’ve come up with 5 activities involving fruit and vegetables to keep children entertained in the comfort of your own home.  We’ve included a range of activities from quiet time activities that need minimal supervision to some more upbeat whole of family activities.

1. Mini Farmers

Child in Vegie Patch

Getting the kids into the garden and growing their own fruit and vegetables is great for their learning and development, and here’s why:

  • It encourages healthy eating. Kids are going to be excited about what they have grown and will more likely to eat or at least try what they grow.
  • Helps with sensory development and building fine and gross motor skills.
  • Teaches your children about responsibility and patience.

3. Fruit and vegetable mosaic

Vegetable Collage

Put those old supermarket catalogues or newspaper ads to good use and recycle them for a creative quiet time activity. Ask your kids to use the pictures of fruit and vegetables to create a collage (you may need to help younger children cut out the pictures).  Think fruit bowls, farms or fun abstract designs.

4. What’s that vegetable or fruit?  Putting taste buds to the test.

Mindful Vegetable Tasting

How well can your child/ren identify what they are eating? Why not put their taste buds to the test. This activity gets children to mindfully taste, smell and describe what they are eating, it is also a great way to introduce new fruit and vegetables into their diet too.
