WA Kick Start to Crunch&Sip® 2011
Nearly 150 schools from across Western Australia registered to Kick Start Crunch&Sip in term one. Kick Start to Crunch&Sip is an opportunity for schools to try Crunch&Sip, become certified or renew and re-invigorate the program. Schools could choose a week or few days in term one that suited them, and choose their level of involvement. Here’s a snapshot of some of the activities:
- Year 6 students at Wagin District High School investigated the importance of healthy eating habits. A literacy component featured the Thomas Rockwell book ‘How to Eat Fried Worms’ with students making worm and vegetable soup (spaghetti for worms). The class also made fruit kebabs to share with year 4 students. Students were engaged with the preparation of healthy foods and usually fussy eaters tried new foods.
- Success Primary School had a whole week focus on Crunch&Sip. The year ones made a fruity face plate as part of Technology and Enterprise and students sang the Crunch&Sip rap in class
- A free apple slinky day was held at Thornlie Primary School using their fruit and vegetable grant. Students also participated in cooking lessons with Foodbank donations.
- Ballidu Primary School devised a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey – ‘Pin the Fruit in the Basket’! Parents also learnt about Crunch&Sip during a parent/student morning.
A big thank you to all participating schools for your efforts!
Although Kick Start to Crunch&Sip activities are held during term one, schools may decide to promote Crunch&Sip at any time of the year. Use the Information Kit for ideas.
Crunch&Sip Student Survey results
In term one, 2011, we asked teachers and students to tell us how they Crunch&Sip! We wanted to know:
- What are all the fruit and veg you have had for your Crunch&Sip break in the past week?
- What is your favourite fruit or veg to have for your Crunch&Sip?
Nearly 700 students and teachers responded.

Become a certified Crunch&Sip school!
Becoming a certified Crunch&Sip school is a great way to support good nutrition and health by promoting daily fruit and water in the classroom.
By becoming a certified Crunch&Sip school:
- The school will receive resources including an apple slinky machine, a set of desk mats (junior, middle and upper primary), tally charts for each classroom to monitor fruit and veg intake, a copy of the Crunch&Sip rap, a fence sign and a certificate.
- On-going support is provided to the school through regular newsletters and advance notice of events such as Fruit & Veg Month and Kick Start to Crunch&Sip.
- Free resources to support the continuation of Crunch&Sip such as parent brochures, student bookmarks, inserts for school newsletters and more.
- The Crunch&Sip break gives children the opportunity to eat the piece of fruit that might otherwise be left in their lunchbox or not eaten at all, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption.
- Drinking water in the classroom allows students to stay hydrated throughout the day.
